HOW A PAINTING IS CREATED

THE DIFFERENT STAGES OF A PAINTING

A painting is a living thing and has to be planned and created step by step.

First, the concept, then the sketch and colour selection. Next, the painting is created in tones to see where the contrasts lie and how they can be strengthened. Finally, it is built up in layers of detail.

	STAGE 1 - Initial notebook sketch planning layout and rule of thirds
	STAGE 2 - Choosing the colours for the painting and creating a small thumbnail in colour to check colour contrasts.
	STAGE 3 - Creating background texture and completing Emus in tonal colours to see contrasts, prior to adding colour to the subjects.
	STAGE 4 - Building up the coloured underpainting layers in both Emus.
	STAGE 5 - Starting to create colour detail in left Emu.
	STAGE 6 - Continuing to build up detail and depth in left Emu.
	STAGE 7 - Starting to create facial detail in right Emu.
	STAGE 8 - Continuing to build up detail and depth right Emu.
	STAGE 9 - Continuing to build up depth and detail in left Emu and more detail in right Emu.
	STAGE 10 - Completed painting.
